Who is a Candidate?

Generally speaking, candidates for heart transplantation are those patients who have no other medical or surgical alternative other than transplantation. Heart transplant candidates are usually listed on a waiting list when they:

  • Are suffering from end-stage heart disease of any diagnosis
  • Have a prognosis of less than one year
  • Are severely limited in their daily activities
  • Have a good potential for rehabilitation post-transplant
  • Have not shown improvement on maximum medical therapy
  • Exhibit a decreased exercise capacity demonstrated by a cardiopulmonary exercise test and decreased left ventricular systolic function with ejection fraction of less than ~20%.
