Center for Advanced Medicine

The Ann and Charles Hertzman Center for Advanced Medicine serves as the focal point for research activities for Jewish Hospital & St. Mary's HealthCare. The Center for Advanced Medicine is committed to offering patients throughout the United States the very latest advances in medical research. The Center’s mission is to provide core research services of outstanding quality for the advancement of the latest and most promising innovations in patient care, through Jewish Hospital’s Clinical Centers of Excellence and affiliated organizations and medical staffs.

The Center works with a number of clinical specialties, ranging from the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease to advances in rehabilitation. Current studies range from the early detection and treatment of lung cancer to the latest in treatment and prevention of stroke. Study services offered by the Center for Advanced Medicine, include coordination, grant writing, research and billing compliance assistance, biostatistics consulting, along with research management to include project and data management.

Since its founding in 1997 through a generous donation from Ann and Charles Hertzman, the Center for Advanced Medicine has been associated with hundreds of clinical research projects. The Center is currently involved with more than 180 clinical trials, each directed by a local Principal Investigator, many of whom are University of Louisville School of Medicine Faculty.

The Center has had a role in many of the Jewish Hospital medical firsts, including the clinical trial for the AbioCor® Implantable Replacement Heart, manufactured by ABIOMED.

In 2002, Jewish Hospital was one of 30 sites that participated in a National Cancer Institute funded National Lung Screening Trial. The trial enrolled 50,000 people nationwide, to help determine if regular screening through either Chest X-rays or CT scans reduce the number of deaths from lung cancer. Jewish Hospital consistently enrolled more participants than any other site.

In 2003, Jewish Hospital was the first in the region to join a trial for the Debakey Ventricular Assist Device (VAD). The device fits in smaller patients and has fewer moving parts than other VADs.
