Promotion of Advanced Education

Obtaining advanced education and/or certification is actively promoted and supported by the organization and within the Nursing Department. In addition to the nursing scholarship program, the hospital supports a tuition assistance program for all employees. The CE curriculum administered by the Nursing Department plans and presents programs on a variety of clinical and professional topics each year. An annual Distinguished Nurse Guest Lectureship program brings in nationally recognized speakers to address current topics and trends in nursing.

Certification in a nursing specialty is encouraged by the nursing department. To demonstrate this commitment, the Nursing Department supports a certification reimbursement program. In an effort to promote certification, Jewish Hospital will pay the application fee one time regardless of the nurse’s success in passing. If the nurse is not successful, he/she is encouraged to retake the exam within six months at his or her own expense.

Orientation and staff development

A comprehensive orientation program is scheduled for each new employee. Each employee is assessed for learning needs, and the orientation is tailored to meet those needs. Orientation includes general classroom orientation, critical care classes, and unit specific orientation and computer classes. Each orientee is paired with a preceptor to facilitate clinical orientation. Length of orientation varies based on individual needs and experience.
